November, national month of (_____)

Who decided the national significance of each month?

For instance, October was National Breast Cancer Awareness month.  I’m not sure when that happened, or who decided that, but it doesn’t really matter because that was just an example.  October was a whole 22 hours ago.  Lets give November the limelight people.

I wasn’t really sure what November’s designated national significance is, so I googled it.

No. 1:  National Novel Writing Month.

Apparently there is a contest where anyone can submit their novel so long as it was written in the span of 30 days.  I don’t know about you, but that sounds daunting.  If you want some tips, you can go to this website (http://www.nanowrimo.org/).

No. 2:  National Vegan Awareness Month

This one I am not sure I understand.  Although, apparently January is “National Meat Month.”  So I guess its only fair that the vegans be represented with their own month.  Here’s a little article for you to peruse if you are really bored:  http://www.technicianonline.com/viewpoint/celebrate-vegan-awareness-month-1.2065215

No. 3:  Hunger Awareness Month

Alright, No.2 makes a lot more sense now.  Just kidding.  Hope I didn’t offend any vegans out there!  I admire your ability to give up so much…I draw the line at fish.  They are just too delicious.  For some info on the hunger awareness thing, go to this website: http://hungeractionmonth.org/

Again, I’m sorry vegans.  But it was funny, to me at least 😉

No. 4:  National Stamp Collecting Month

Really?  Stamp collectors need an entire month to make people aware of…what, how boring their hobby is?  That stamps are getting way too expensive and are ruining snail mail?  I love writing letters, and stamps are making that more and more difficult.  I used to love getting all sorts of fun stamps, but now I can only afford the stupid stamps with a bell on them.  Stamps don’t deserve a month.

No. 5:  National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month

Finally, one I can enjoy!  I am a tried and true peanut butter lover, and I feel pretty special that November is dedicated to me for just loving the heck out of peanut butter.  How great is that?  http://www.peanutbutterlovers.com/

Alright, thats enough I guess.

If you’re wondering where I got all this great info, check out this website:  http://www.quamada.com/months.html

It is probably not authoritative, nor exhaustive.  Nor does it elucidate the manner in which these “awareness” causes were assigned to each month.  I would also like to point out that December and August are woefully slighted in the number of causes brought to light during their calendar time slots.  Somebody better get on that.
